Ninety Years of Nobody

Hesper Foundry showed up on the long scan as a cold rectangle four kilometres on its long axis, tumbling very slowly about a point somewhere near its middle, exactly as it had been tumbling in every survey since the last crew left it. Rey Castellan had looked at that rectangle in briefing documents for eleven weeks and had formed no opinion about it whatsoever, which she considered professional.

"It is not tumbling," said Sabine Tarr, at the third hour of the approach, with her chin on the back of her hands. "Look at the roll. It is holding attitude to about a tenth of a degree and correcting on a cycle. Somebody wrote that as a tumble ninety years ago and everybody has copied it out of the last report ever since."

Rey came and looked. The younger woman was right, which Rey had begun to expect and had not yet decided how she felt about. The foundry was not falling end over end in the slow indifferent way of dead structures. It was keeping its long face to the sun and its radiators edge-on, and it was doing so with small precise thruster work that cost it propellant it had no way of replacing.

"Why would it," said Ivo Marchetti from the other couch, without opening his eyes. He was the assessor, sixty-one, on his last contract before a pension he had described twice already as inadequate, and he had spent the first three hours of the approach demonstrating a professional lack of interest that Rey had already worked out was a position rather than a temperament. "It is a foundry. It rolls beam. It has no reason on earth to care which way it points and no faculty for caring even if it did."

"Thermal," said Sabine. "Keeps the melt hall in shadow and the radiators cold. It is what you would do." "It is what a person would do." "It is what the design would do, if the design were still running the attitude loop, which apparently it is." Sabine sat back. "Ninety years, Ivo. That is the part nobody has quite said out loud in any of the paperwork."

Rey had said it out loud, in a room in Palun Station, to four people who had all looked at their hands. Hesper had been built to run unattended for twenty years between maintenance calls. It had gone ninety, because the company that owned it had been sold twice and dissolved once, and because the beam stock kept arriving, on schedule, in the same quantities, to the same three yards, and nobody interrupts a thing that is working.

They matched rotation at nineteen hundred and came in on the docking spine, and the spine's capture ring turned to meet them without being asked, and all three of them watched it turn and none of them said anything about it, and Rey noted the time in her log because that was the first moment in ninety years that Hesper Foundry had known anybody was there.

The lock cycled in forty seconds and did it properly: pressure up, hold, sample, hold, purge, green. Rey stood in it with her helmet still on because there is a rule about that and because she had spent nineteen years enforcing it on other people.

The air read clean. Nitrogen and oxygen at nine tenths of a standard atmosphere, humidity at eleven percent, trace hydrocarbons from the machine oil at levels that would have got a formal note in an inspection and nothing more. Carbon dioxide at four hundred parts per million, which meant something was scrubbing, which meant something had been scrubbing for ninety years for nobody.

"Why is there air," said Marchetti. It was not really a question and Rey answered it anyway, because answering it was easier than the alternative. "Because nobody told it to stop. The life system is on the same bus as the process cooling and you cannot shut one without the other. It is in the manual. It is on page eleven of the manual."

She took the helmet off. The air was cool and very slightly sweet and smelled of hot metal and old lubricant and, underneath both, faintly and unmistakably, of nothing at all, which is a smell that only exists in places where no one has been for a long time and which she had smelled twice before in her career and both times in bad circumstances.

The lights came up as they walked, in sections, ahead of them, and went down behind them, on the standard occupancy logic that every station on the belt uses. Sabine kept turning round to watch them go out. "It has been doing that in the dark," she said. "For ninety years. Coming on for nobody and going off behind nobody."

"It has not been doing anything," said Marchetti. "There is nobody to come on for, so it has been off. That is not sad, that is a photocell." But he said it too quickly and rather too loudly for a corridor, and Rey filed that away with everything else she was filing away, which by that point was a great deal.

The corridor ran two hundred metres to the transfer node and it was, in every respect she could measure, exactly as built. Grey composite, yellow deck striping, handholds every metre and a half, placards in three languages, one of them extinct. She had walked a hundred corridors like it. She was entirely unprepared, as a consequence, for deck four.

The transfer node opened onto the gallery above the melt hall, and Rey went through it first, and stopped so abruptly that Sabine walked into the back of her.

The melt hall was two hundred metres long and sixty high and every interior surface of it, from the deck to the crane rails, had been worked. Not damaged. Not corroded. Worked: cut into, with fine tooling, in a repeating figure about a hand's width across that ran across the panels and round the stanchions and over the weld seams without once breaking stride, the way frost runs across a window and the way nothing manufactured ever does.

Nobody said anything for a while. The hall was lit from above by the working lamps and the figure caught the light along its cut edges so that the whole enormous room seemed very faintly to shimmer as they moved along the gallery, which Rey understood immediately was an accident of geometry and which stopped her breathing anyway.

"Right," said Marchetti eventually. "Right." He put a hand out and did not quite touch the rail, and stood there with it hovering a centimetre off the steel like a man at a shrine he does not believe in. "That is machining. That is surfacing tool work, and it is very good surfacing tool work. Somebody has run a head over four thousand square metres of hull plate and never once let it chatter."

"Not somebody," said Sabine. She had gone down on one knee at the gallery edge with her light close to the deck. "Look at the depth. It is consistent to a few tens of microns over the whole panel, and it goes right up to the stanchion weld and stops one millimetre short, and then it picks up on the other side in register. A person with a hand tool could not do that in a year. A person with a hand tool would not want to."

Rey made herself walk the length of the gallery and look at all of it and count. Eleven panels between stanchions. The figure repeated, but not exactly: the fourth panel's version was very slightly denser than the third's, and the fifth denser than the fourth, and somewhere around the eighth it began to open out again, and by the eleventh it was nearly as sparse as the first.

She stood at the far end with her hand on the rail and looked back down the whole two hundred metres of it, and thought: that is a period. That is a wave with a period in it, and it has come out of a building that has been alone since before my grandmother was born, and I am going to have to write a sentence about this in a report.

They had the argument in the galley that night, which was also as built, and also worked over on every flat surface, so that they ate off a table that shimmered.

"It is decoration," said Sabine. "I am not saying it is art. I am saying somebody would have to be wilfully blind to walk into that hall and use a different word first." "The word is artefact," said Marchetti. "It is what the process left behind. A riverbed has ripples in it and nobody writes to the river about them."

"A riverbed does not have an eleven-panel period." "You do not know that it is eleven. You counted eleven panels because there are eleven panels between the stanchions, which were put there by an engineer in a shipyard, and you have found the period of the stanchions and called it the period of the pattern." Marchetti pushed his tray away. "That is the single easiest mistake in this entire field and you made it in four minutes."

Sabine went red and shut up, and Rey let the silence run for about ten seconds before she stepped on it, because she had been running crews for a long time and knew what that particular silence turns into by day nine.

"He is right," she said, "and you are right, and I want both of you to be right somewhere I can read it. Sabine, map the hall. All of it, every panel, at a resolution that will settle the period argument, and do not tell me what you think it means until you have got the whole thing. Ivo, pull ninety years of process logs off the works bus. If it is an artefact then the log will show what made it and when."

"And you?" "I am going to walk the whole station," said Rey, "and find out how much of it looks like that hall, because if it is four thousand square metres I have a maintenance problem and if it is the entire four kilometres then I do not know what I have and neither does anybody at Palun."

It was, in the end, the entire four kilometres. It took her six days to confirm it. Every pressurised surface, every corridor, both docking spines, the inside of the water tanks, the inside of the empty crew quarters, the inside of the cupboards in the empty crew quarters. Somewhere around day three she stopped photographing it. Somewhere around day five she started leaving the lights off behind her deliberately, and could not have said why, and wrote that down too.
